- Backup generator raised on storm surge platform to ensure continuous operation
A combination police and fire department facility, this 24,000 SF building was constructed near an existing Town Hall, and was designed specifically to withstand hurricanes and other inclement weather in its coastal setting. Apart from the vehicle bays, the entire building is elevated 20’-0” above flood level on a series of piers. The fire department’s portion of the headquarters is equipped with three double-loaded, drive-through apparatus bays, an integrated training platform, administrative space and 10 individual sleep rooms. The police department’s spaces include areas for administration, investigations, records and evidence storage, patrol operations and holding facilities, accessed via a secure elevator. The departments share a large, centrally located training and conference room. Optima Engineering provided the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design for the project. The design includes a variable air volume HVAC system, high efficiency lighting and lighting control design. To ensure continuous operation even in a major storm, the building’s backup generator is raised on a 15’-0” high storm surge platform. The project was completed in May 2010.
