Optima Engineering

Police Station and Town Hall

Holden Beach, NC

Project Summary

Renovation and expansion of police station and town hall at Holden Beach resulted in 15% energy consumption improvement over baseline building.

Project Highlights

  • Variable speed air handling units and high efficiency two-stage heat pump compressors
  • HVAC improves humidity control and increased ventilation
  • Efficient lighting fixtures and lighting controls

This project included the renovation and expansion of an existing 3,000 SF, single-story municipal building. The addition expanded the facility into an 18,000 SF, two-story building that houses the town administration, town meeting hall and local law enforcement headquarters. Optima was responsible for the design of all building engineering systems. The new Council Chambers provides 142 public seats and space for 9 council members and staff. The new police facility alleviates the department’s prior space constraint issues, and was designed to accommodate future expansion and growth for personnel and storage. Mechanical systems included variable speed air handling units and high efficiency two-stage heat pump compressors. The equipment provided is able to part-load, providing the additional benefit of improved humidity control for beach-side conditions and increased ventilation when required for high occupancy town meetings. Lighting systems included automatic controls and energy efficient fixtures. The facility is also equipped with an energy efficient elevator. Energy simulation performed per ASHRAE 90.1-2004 Performance Rating Method resulted in 15% energy consumption improvement over a baseline (code minimum) building.
