  • Energy efficient lighting and automatic lighting controls
  • Solar thermal water heating
  • 30% energy savings over equivalent baseline building

This project involved renovations and additions to the existing East Flat Rock Readiness Center in East Flat Rock, NC. The design scope covered 24,000 SF of existing and new space, and included readiness administration, weapons storage, telecommunications equipment and a drill hall. Optima provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering design services. The mechanical system design included VRV (variable refrigerant volume) systems with decoupled/dedicated outside air systems that included energy recovery at locker rooms and gang toilets. Lighting design at the facility included fixtures with 40% energy consumption savings over code minimum, and automatic lighting controls. Plumbing systems included solar thermal water heating. The total simulated energy savings for the building amounted to 30% over an equivalent baseline building. The project was reviewed by the North Carolina State Construction Office (including Senate Bill 668 requirements for major facilities), and achieved LEED Silver certification (required by the National Guard). It was completed in 2012.
